AddiPlaS project: "Plastic chemical addItive release from plastic debris and their mobility in soil agroecosystems"

The project, “Plastic chemical ADDItive release from PLAstic debris and their mobility in Soil agroecosystems”, AddiPlaS,  (Grant PID2022-140011OB-I00 funded by MCIN/AEI) will determine the PCA (Plastic Chemical Additives) release from microplastics (MPs), the fate of PCAs in soil and their impacts on soil health through simulated agroecosystem experiments under relevant environmental conditions and ad-hoc designed laboratory tests. AddiPlaS is coordinated by Virtudes Martínez and Irene de Bustamante from IMDEA Water Institute.

AddiPlaS will contribute to determine PCA release rates from MPs and will discriminate between effects of MPs and PCAs to shed a light about the role of PCA in the environmental risk associated to plastic contamination. AddiPlaS will advance in developing methodologies under ad-hoc designed experimental approaches for detecting PCAs in environmental matrices using cutting edge instrumentation and combining different analytical strategies to determine unknown additives in commercial plastics with a wide range of molecular structures and chemical properties. The measurements and characterization of PCA release in water and simulated agroecosystems will expand the studies dealing with occurrence, fate and effects of PCAs on such a scenario. Indeed, AddiPlaS will applied this methodology to determine the occurrence of target PCAs in surface and groundwater in an agroecosystem providing very valuable information under field conditions of potentially impacted water resources.

The Nat4Health project "Antibiotics, hormones, persistent and mobile organic contaminants and pathogens, the complex mixture in agriculture and livestock scenario. Risk to health or natural attenuation?" (project PID2020-118521RB-I00 financiado por MCIN/ AEI /10.13039/501100011033) has been selected for funding in the call 2020 R&D&I Projects from the State Program for Research, Development and Innovation Oriented to the Challenges of the Society of the Ministry of Science and Innovation and the State Agency of Research, and will last 4 years (2021-2025). Nat4Health is coordinated by Raffaella Meffe and Ana de Santiago from IMDEA Water Institute in collaboration with the Carlos III Health Institute, Université Laval (Canada) and Karl Frances University (Austria). Nat4Health addresses the challenge of integrating two major fields of research, public health and the environment, with the global objective of protecting the human being and his surroundings. The continuous emission of complex mixture of contaminants by point and diffuse sources directly and indirectly threatens food security and air quality. The main goal of Nat4Health is to evaluate if these scenarios may pose a health risk due to the entry of contaminants into the food chain and due to air inhalation, or if natural attenuation processes in the air-soil-water-plant system hamper contaminant propagation.

Nat4Health project "Antibiotics, hormones, persistent and mobile organic contaminants and pathogens, the complex mixture in agriculture and livestock scenario. Risk to health or natural attenuation?"

Towards multifunctional agricultural landscapes in Europe: Assessing and governing synergies between food production, biodiversity and ecosystem services (TALE)

TALE project (2015-2017) is funded by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness within the framework of the Joint International Programming Actions and it's coordinated by Ángel de Miguel García, former IMDEA Water researcher. The researcher Raffaella Meffe is a member of TALE project research team.

World-wide increase in human population, market’s globalization, dietary shifts and urbanization are increasing the pressure on natural resources and have become a high priority on the political and scientific agenda. Most of these processes lead to multiple competing demands for land. The resulting demand driven land use changes come at a cost in the form of trade-offs between food or bioenergy production, biodiversity conservation and other ecosystem services (ESS) like clean water, erosion control or soil fertility. Understanding and balancing these trade-offs has a high priority on the policy agenda to promote sustainability and avoid undesirable societal outcomes. By assessing and governing synergies between food production, biodiversity and ecosystem services, TALE will develop related strategies.

Reclamation of water: beyond the Royal Decree 1620/2007

The project "Reclamation of water: beyond the Royal Decree 1620/2007" (2013-2015) is funded by the Fundación Centro de las Nuevas Tecnologías del Agua  within the call Fundamental Projects Not Oriented. The project is coordinated by the researcher Javier Lillo Ramos of the Rey Juan Carlos University and involves members of the  Team in Vegetation Filters  of  Alcalá University and IMDEA Water Institute as the researchers Irene de Bustamante GutiérrezVirtudes Martínez Hernández  and Raffaella Meffe. The project collaborates with numerous institutions such as  Rey Juan Carlos University,  IMDEA Water Institute, CENTA Foundation and  Las Palmas de Gran Canaria University.

This research project considers two regeneration technologies for treated wastewaters based on ground application, they are crop irrigation and horizontal reactive beds (permeable reactive barriers, PRBs). The first case includes irrigation systems for some crops with environmental and economic value (forage grasses and species for bio-fuel production), where the regeneration medium will be formed by the plant, the soil, and the non-saturated zone. In the other case, the regeneration medium will be formed by a PRB, the soil and the non-saturated zone (NSZ). In both cases, the main goal of the project is to assess quantitatively the medium capability to regenerate the quality of the treated wastewater that is applied on the ground, in a context on environmental sustainability, health protection and economic and financial balance.

Pilot study of eco-processes for the treatment of road runoff: Evaluation of the performance and ecosystem monitoring

The project "Pilot study of eco-processes for the treatment of road runoff: Évaluation of the performance and monitoring of the ecosystem" (2013-2014) is a research project funded by the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Nature et technologies (FRQNT) from Quebec, Canada. The research project is coordinated by Rosa Galvez from Université Laval. The researcher from IMDEA Water Ana de Santiago Martín participates in this project.

About 50% of the salt applied during winter road maintenance is transported via surface runoff, with the remaining 50% entering the subsurface as aquifer recharge. The 1970s construction of a road section of the Felix-Leclerc Highway A40 near Quebec City (Canada) has greatly contributed to water quality degradation in the Saint-Augustin Lake watershed. To prevent the potential impact caused by road runoff involving de-icing salts and trace metals, among others, on the watershed a full-scale treatment chain system (including a detention basin, a filtering bed, and a constructed wetland) was built. The main goal of this field research project concerns the monitoring program to evaluate groundwater and surface water quality in the Saint-Augustin Lake watershed, as well as system performance in the first and second years of operation. Read more

Reuse of treated water for environmental uses: Aquifer recharge by reactive barriers and forestry for energy purposes (REAGUAM)

REAGUAM project (2010-2012) is funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation (CGL2009-13168-C03) and involves numerous institutions, including IMDEA Water Institute, Alcalá UniversityRey Juan Carlos University and CENTA Foundation.  REAGUAM is coordinated by the researcher Irene de Bustamante Gutiérrez and includes researchers such as Virtudes Martínez Hernández and Raffaella Meffe.

This research project considers the reuse of treated urban wastewaters from an environmental point of view. Thus, the proposed study will include approaches from two different reuse technologies in the framework of the RD 1620/2007: on the one hand, the water reuse by agricultural techniques (Vegetation Filters and irrigation of vegetable species for biomass and bio-fuel production); and on the other hand, the water reuse by the regeneration of treated waters through horizontal reactive beds for aquifer recharge. The main goal of the project is to develop the applicability of these technologies in those environmental uses for small urban communities. In this purpose, two aims are implicit: a) to regenerate of treated urban wastewater, by reducing the mobility and bioavailability of nonwished substances in the treated water, and b) to get of an additional environmental benefit, through the reuse in irrigation of for production of biomass and bio-fuel.
